Miami’s tap water is safe by EPA standards — but “safe” and “clean” aren’t quite the same thing. Here’s what we find most often when we test water in Miami-Dade homes:

Hard Water (Very Hard, Actually)

At 383 ppm, Miami has genuinely hard water. Water above 180 ppm is classified as “very hard” — Miami nearly doubles that threshold. The calcium and magnesium that cause hardness aren’t a health risk, but they do a number on your plumbing. We see it constantly: scale-coated heating elements in water heaters, clogged showerheads, soap that won’t lather, and dishwashers leaving spots on every glass.

Chlorine and Chloramines

What it doesn’t do is filter out chlorine, chloramines, sediment, or PFAS — it just addresses hardness.

A whole house water filter targets contaminants — chlorine, sediment, VOCs, heavy metals, sometimes PFAS — but a standard carbon filter won’t soften your water. Some multi-stage systems combine both functions, which is often what we recommend for Miami homes given the hardness levels.

We start with a water test. Under-sink is the more common choice — it handles the water you actually consume without putting the entire household supply through a membrane (which produces some reject water and has a slower flow rate). We set up an annual filter and membrane replacement schedule so effectiveness stays consistent.

UV purification uses ultraviolet light to neutralize bacteria, viruses, and protozoa by scrambling their DNA — no chemicals added, no effect on taste or smell. In Miami, it’s most valuable after hurricanes or flooding, and it’s essential for any home on well water in Miami-Dade or surrounding counties.

Important note: UV works best in clear water. Sediment and turbidity block UV effectiveness, so we always install a sediment pre-filter upstream. We also replace the UV lamp annually — after about 9,000 hours, output drops below effective levels even though the lamp still appears to be on.

Most homeowners underestimate how quickly filter media wears out under Miami’s water conditions. High hardness and sediment load burn through cartridges faster here than in softer-water cities. A clogged filter that hasn’t been changed isn’t just ineffective — in some systems, trapped contaminants can start releasing back into the water as media breaks down.
